A male paramedic has died in a Sydney hospital after he was stabbed in an early morning attack at a fast-food restaurant in the city’s southwest.
Police were called to the McDonald’s on Queen Street in Campbelltown at 5.30am to find the paramedic suffering from stab wounds.
He was taken to Liverpool Hospital for treatment but died of his injuries later on Friday morning.
A 21-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Campbelltown Police Station for questioning.
Officers have established a crime scene and a homicide investigation is under way.
NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dominic Morgan is expected to address the media on Friday afternoon.
Speaking before the man died in hospital, NSW Premier Chris Minns said the incident was a reminder of the job’s dangers.
“It’s a reminder that it is a very dangerous and difficult job that requires enormous courage to put on that uniform every day and serve the people of NSW,” he told reporters.
“My thoughts are with every paramedic in NSW.”
