Man arrested in Fyshwick after high speed chase

A 38-year-old man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today (Tuesday 11 August) on driving and firearm offences, after a high-speed-chase with ACT Policing ended in his arrest in Fyshwick around midnight last night.

The man led Police through Oaks Estate, Beard and Fyshwick before he was apprehended and will face charges of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, unlicensed driver, possessing a drug of dependence, possessing a prohibited firearm, and possessing ammunition.

Police first observed the driver in a silver Mitsubishi SUV around 12.35am at Oaks Estate Road, where he did a U-Turn and accelerated at โ€œconsiderable speedโ€ towards Canberra Avenue in Beard.

Police activated their emergency lights and sirens, while the man continued to drive at speeds of up to 180km/h in an 80km/h sign posted area.

The chase came to an abrupt stop when the vehicle drove over a roundabout at Isa Street in Fyshwick and separated both front tyres from their rims.

The driver fled on foot but was arrested shortly after.

ACT Ambulance service paramedics assessed him before he was taken to hospital, but he was later released to the ACT Watch House.
