A 43-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences following a serious family violence incident in Tuggeranong overnight. Â Â
About 8pm last night, Tuesday 11 January, police were called to a Tuggeranong residence following reports of a disturbance.
Upon arrival, police were advised a man had allegedly assaulted his ex-partner, had entered the residence by breaking a window and had threatened to set the residence on fire. Â
The man was located at the rear of the property in a shed where he had allegedly set fire to a freezer after pouring petrol on it.
As police removed the man from the shed, he poured petrol on an officer while also trying to ignite the fuel with a lighter and violently resisted arrest. He was eventually placed in handcuffs after the deployment of OC spray.
The fire was extinguished with a garden hose by a family member.
The 43-year-old man was transported to hospital for assessment and subsequently charged with aggravated assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated assault, property damage, assault a frontline community service provider, acts endangering life, use of an inflammable device, and resist a Territory Official. Â
He is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today, 11 January, where bail will be opposed. Â
In a media statement, ACT Policing said the organisation is strongly committed to protecting the community against family violence. “As first responders, we see the devastating effects this behaviour can have on victims, their children, extended family, friends and the whole community,” the statement said.Â
