Man charged with assaulting police, lockdown breach

A 20-year-old Fisher man has been charged with assaulting frontline community service providers and nine other offences following an incident in Charnwood overnight.

About 10.30pm on Thursday 12 August, police observed a dark coloured Audi which appeared to actively be avoiding them by turning off its headlights before proceeding in the wrong direction around the roundabout at the intersection of Ginninderra Drive and Florey Drive.

A short time later, police stopped the vehicle in Cartwright Street, Charnwood and attempted to speak to the driver. The driver refused to answer questions and refused to participate in a roadside screening test for alcohol.

The man was advised he was under arrest and as police attempted to remove him from his vehicle, he violently resisted arrest. After a significant struggle, the man was eventually subdued following the use of a Taser.

Two officers received minor injuries in the struggle including a dislocated finger, cuts and abrasions.

After being transported to ACT Watch House, the man allegedly caused injury to a third officer when he kicked the door of the caged vehicle as it was being opened.

The man was charged with multiple offences including: assault frontline community service provider (three charges), obstruct Territory Official (three charges), refuse to undergo roadside screening test, damage commonwealth property, unlicensed driver, drive unregistered and uninsured vehicle, negligent driving, drive with false plates.

As the man was a resident of Fisher and had no lawful reason to be in Charnwood, he was also charged with failing to comply with a health direction following the ACT entering a seven-day lockdown at 5pm yesterday, 12 August.

He is scheduled to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court today.
