Henry Rolland Park in Acton has once again been robbed of its attractive brass fixtures.
Today (5 November), ACT Policing announced a 40-year-old man was arrested for theft yesterday, after a search warrant was conducted in a residence on Seymour Place in Kambah.
The crime was reported by the ACT Government on 30 September 2020 and CCTV footage showed a man working hard to separate brass fitting from seats facing the waterfront.
He left in a vehicle that was later identified as his brother’s car.
After a similar incident which also involved the theft of brass in 2018, the ACT Government expanded the Public Safety CCTV Network to include Henry Rolland Park.
ACT Policing Detective Sergeant Jason Dziubinski, of the Proactive Intervention and Disruption Team, said the success of the investigation showed how beneficial CCTV can be.
The newly launched Proactive Intervention and Disruption Team began work in August 2020, with a focus on early intervention and reducing repeat calls for service.
It formed with the aim of decreasing the number of people falling into the cycle of the judicial system, by diverting high-risk individuals to mental health and social services, targeting known crime hotspots, and disrupting recidivist crime.
According to current estimates of scrap metal pricing, one kilogram of brass is worth between $4 and $5.
“Brass is a highly sought-after item and people buying second-hand equipment of this value should always question where it has come from,” Detective Sergeant Dzibuinski said.
The man was charged and granted bail.
He is set to appear before ACT Magistrates Court on Friday 22 January 2021.
