Man extradited from Queensland to face 27 charges

A 22-year-old man extradited from Queensland by ACT Policing on Saturday will face court today charged with 27 offences, after absconding in 2020.

The man was convicted on 27 charges in the ACT in August 2020, and initially sentenced to four years’ imprisonment, which was suspended upon his entering into a Drug and Treatment Order (DATO).

In the following months, he failed to comply with the DATO, which the court extended twice. After breaching his DATO for a third time, the man was arrested pending re-sentencing and granted bail. He then failed to appear in court in November 2020.

A warrant for his arrest was issued in June 2021.

On Wednesday 3 May 2023, the man was arrested in Nundah, Queensland by Queensland Police Service officers. He attended the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Saturday 6 May, where ACT Policing officers requested his extradition. The man was extradited to the ACT by air that afternoon.

The man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today, Monday 8 May, where police will oppose bail.

ACT Policing Officer-in-Charge, Gungahlin Station, Detective Inspector Dave Craft said offenders should never think they can escape justice by leaving the ACT.

“This arrest is a signal to those who bring harm to the ACT Community, that borders do not prevent ACT Policing from bringing them before the Courts,” Detective Inspector Craft said.

“Furthermore, people who think that with the passage of time we’ll just forget their crimes and move on are also mistaken.

“Leaving the ACT before completing your sentence is only delaying the inevitable – you will be found and held responsible for your actions.

The 27 offences the man was found guilty of in August 2020 were:

  • Five counts of Drive Motor Vehicle Without Consent
  • Two counts of Minor Theft
  • Two counts of Obtain Property by Deception
  • Two counts of Damaging Commonwealth Property
  • Two counts of Fail to Stop Motor Vehicle for Police
  • Two counts of Aggravated Reckless Driving
  • Aggravated Dangerous Driving
  • Reckless Driving
  • Theft
  • Use Unregistered Vehicle
  • Escape from Arrest or Custody
  • Burglary
  • Resist Territory Official
  • Possession of Ammunition
