Man from NSW hotspot arrested for ACT Covid breach

A 36-year-old Carramar NSW man who was allegedly in the ACT from a COVID-19 hotspot and in possession of drugs was arrested by ACT Policing this morning, Sunday 8 August.

Carramar is located in the City of Fairfield Local Government Area which is one of eight LGAs in NSW under stay at home orders until at least 28 August as health authorities battle to contain a outbreak of the virus.

ACT Policing will allege about 1.50am today, the man refused to stop his car when directed to do so by police in Bunda Street, Canberra City.

The man drove into Tocumwal Lane before abandoning his car and running into Petrie Plaza. After a short pursuit on foot, police arrested the man.

When the man was searched at the ACT Watch House he was found to be in possession of a substance suspected of being cocaine.

Further enquiries revealed he was in the ACT in breach of the current Public Health Directions banning people travelling from the Greater Sydney Areas to the ACT.

The man will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court tomorrow, Monday 9 August, charged with failing to comply with a direction by the chief medical officer, failing to stop a motor vehicle, drug possession, and unlawful possession of stolen property.
