Michael Maguire lands coaching role at Raiders

Premiership-winning coach Michael Maguire will join the Canberra Raiders as Ricky Stuart’s right-hand man for at least the next two seasons.

The Raiders officially appointed Maguire senior NRL consultant on Tuesday and will welcome him in after New Zealand’s Rugby League World Cup campaign.

Working with the club full-time, Maguire will have similar duties to an assistant coach and the Green Machine told AAP they expected he would be Stuart’s first port of call for football-related matters.

Maguire’s appointment replenishes Canberra’s coaching staff following the departure of assistants Brett White and Andrew McFadden.

Stuart’s other assistant, Michael Crawley, remains at the club.

The Raiders said they did not expect Maguire’s new role to prevent him from coaching the Kiwis in international fixtures.

“Michael is a wonderful signing for our club and he brings valuable experience and knowledge to the role,” Stuart said in a statement.

“He has a wonderful record as a coach at all levels of the game and we’re very fortunate to be able to secure someone of his calibre.

“I can’t wait to work with him and have him working alongside our coaching staff and playing group.”

Wests Tigers sacked Maguire as their head coach in June following a poor start to the season.

Prior to that, he coached South Sydney to their drought-breaking 2014 premiership victory and the Wigan Warriors to a win in the 2010 Super League grand final.

He previously served as an assistant coach at the Raiders, where he played 11 of his 16 first-grade games during the 1990s.
