More fee-free courses at Canberra’s CIT

Twenty-three courses have been added to the Fee-Free TAFE program at the Canberra Institute of Technology, funded by the ACT and Australian Governments. The program aims to address skills shortages by training locals.

“We’re expanding the range of fee-free TAFE courses available to cover study in areas including information technology, construction, nursing, and other community services,” said Chris Steel, ACT Minister for Skills.

“A range of free short courses will also now be available to any Canberran over 17 who has left school. This will help existing workers refresh their knowledge in their current industry, or to skill up to get a job in another industry…

“These changes ensure even more access to training places with the courses on offer to meet the varied needs of Canberra’s workers and businesses.”

The Fee-Free TAFE program offers more than 2,500 fee-free training places this year. So far, 1,000 people have enrolled, and 1,500 places are still on offer, Mr Steel said. Enrolments for semester two are now open.

The more than 11,000 veterans who live in Canberra, including current and former members of the ADF, are now eligible for any course through the Fee-Free TAFE program, Mr Steel said, “recognising their prior learning and skills to allow them to study basic or advanced courses through our public provider”.
