Over 200 requests for assistance (RFAs) have been received by the ACT State Emergency Services (ACTSES) after thunderstorms in the ACT last night, with similar weather predicted for this afternoon, Sunday 19 December.
The ACTSES crews, supported by ACT Fire & Rescue and ACT Rural Fire Service firefighters, have been busy helping the Canberra community clear fallen trees and make emergency repairs.
203 RFAs were received by the ACTSES with 105 completed by 9.25am today as help continues to be provided throughout the day.
Canberrans are told to stay on alert with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting storms to impact the ACT again this afternoon, similar to those experienced yesterday.
The ACTSES have issued a number of recommendations for Canberrans in preparation for storm activity:
- Move your car under cover or away from trees.
- Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
- Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
- Stay indoors away from windows and keep children and pets indoors as well.
- For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the ACTSES on 132 500.
- If the incident is life-threatening, call Emergency Triple Zero (000)
