Natasha Bullock lauded for promoting women’s art at NGA

Natasha Bullock, Assistant Director, Collections and Exhibitions at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) has today, Wednesday 1 March, been announced the winner of the 2023 ACT Australian Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership.

An awarding winning curator, arts leader and historian, Ms Bullock has been working in the arts and cultural sector for more than 25 years. Joining the NGA in 2019, she was the spearhead of the Gallery’s Gender Equity Action Plan which drives towards gender equity throughout the institution from the collections, artistic programs and everyday operations. Know My Name, in which Ms Bullock holds a vital role, is a national program of exhibitions, commissions, and creative collaborations that celebrates and educates on the diversity and work of Australia’s female artists.

The annual awards acknowledge and commemorate women who are making important contributions, encouraging change, and paving the way for equality in all areas of life in Australia. National, state and territory winners will be presented their awards at different women’s leadership events throughout the year.

Ms Bullock, who will accept the award at the Australian Women’s Leadership Symposium in Canberra on 23 June, says it is an honour to be recognised, with both the award and the legacy that she now gets to share with so many outstanding female leaders as we continuously move towards a more inclusive future.

“Having worked extensively as a curator with artists and their ideas, I appreciate the power of images to make and share meaning. Art reflects humanity, helping to create a sense of our collective and individual selves, and for that reason, we and the following generations need to see more art by women on the walls of galleries, in the pages of books and in our collections,” Ms Bullock says.

Taking home the title national title of 2023 Australian Awards for Excellence in Women’s Leadership is Karen Mundine, CEO of Reconciliation Australia. With a passion for instigating meaningful change, Ms Mundine has played instrumental roles in national Reconciliation events such as the Apology to the Stolen Generations, Corroboree 2000, and the 1997 and 2021 Australian Reconciliation conventions. Ms Mundine will receive her award at the Brisbane Australian Women’s Leadership Symposium on 12 May.
