Jigsaw provides real-world experience of work
Twenty-nine-year-old Bradly – a trainee at Jigsaw – has always wanted to work. However, until recently, he could only access traditional ‘disability day programs’ – despite leaving school 11 years ago. Bradly’s legal guardian believes his blindness has been an ‘issue’ for many employment programs and, sadly, his story is not uncommon.
Jigsaw is a social enterprise founded on the idea that the best way to prepare people for work is through the real-world experience of work.
“People with disability first gain skills and training, then are employed at award wage in our commercial business,” explains Paul Brown, Jigsaw CEO. “After that, we support them in their transition to open employment in the right role with the right employer.”
It’s a model that’s working. “Since we started in 2014, 91 per cent of people employed, or transitioned into employment, by Jigsaw retain their employment to this day,” he says of having supported over 750 people across four hubs in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide, with plans for a Canberra hub to open in October.
With a focus on school leavers (those aged 16-29 years), Jigsaw is giving young people with disability, like Bradly, a chance at a financially stable and socially inclusive future.
Alpha Disability Services helps to find a place to call home

Fragile X Association advocates for increased testing
Fragile X syndrome is frequently under-recognised and often misdiagnosed, leading to delayed treatment and care, but recent medical advancements offer new hope to affected families.
Fragile X syndrome is the leading cause of inherited developmental disability, affecting approximately one in 5,000 people.
This lifelong condition causes developmental disability and learning difficulties, speech delays, ADHD, anxiety, sensory sensitivities, and autistic-like behaviours.
“Recent developments mean far more Australians can be tested to see if they are carriers of Fragile X, including testing for women prior to pregnancy,” says Executive Director of Fragile X Association of Australia, Wendy Bruce.
“Moreover, the expansion of genetic carrier testing covered by Medicare from late 2023 will lift the financial burden off families.”
Fragile X Association of Australia is advocating right now for the inclusion of Fragile X syndrome in the expansion of newborn bloodspot screening.

Disability Expo comes to Canberra, 2-3 September
The team at Impact Institute are excited to bring their Disability Expo to Canberra for the first time next month, Friday 2 and Saturday 3 September.
Over 60 exhibitors will fill Exhibition Park in Canberra, showcasing the very best in services and product providers for those living with a disability. This free event brings the disability community together with members of government agencies, community, and advocacy groups able to meet face-to-face in one place.
There will be plenty of family-friendly entertainment provided over the two days. A jam-packed stage hosts a number of all-ability performers and speakers including two-time gold medal winner, Rugby Paralympian, Ryley Batt.
Covid-19 safety is a top priority at the Expo. All staff will be wearing masks and extra cleaning will take place over the two days, while attendees are encouraged to wear masks and register their attendance before heading to the Expo.
