New health centre for Gungahlin

The ACT Government has announced it will build a new health centre, an ACTAS Ambulance and Fire Station, and an indoor sports facility in Gungahlin.

The North Gungahlin Health Centre will offer free preventative health services and treatment for chronic disease. It will be staffed by a multidisciplinary team, including nurses and allied health workers. It is one of four new health centres the ACT Government has committed to build.

“The North Gungahlin Health Centre is another example of the ACT Government’s commitment to delivering more public health services, closer to where people live,” health minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said.

“Investing more in preventative health care and support for chronic conditions will keep Canberrans healthier in the community, taking the pressure off our acute hospitals.

“The new Health Centres will complement our existing network of nurse-led Walk-in Centres, community health centres and the Territory’s hospital system.”

Community consultation will begin today on the services and design of the new North Gungahlin Health Centre. Canberrans can provide feedback on the services to be provided through the YourSay website, information sessions, and pop-up stalls across Gungahlin.

The government will invest $21.72 million through the 2024–25 ACT Budget to design and construct the centre.

The centre will be built on a greenfield site in Casey, along Kingsland Parade, close to the shopping centre and public transport.

“We have seen rapid growth over the last decade in the Gungahlin district, and this investment will help connect Canberrans in northern Gungahlin with more local health services and community facilities,” Chief Minister Andrew Barr said.

The government also intends to build an indoor sports facility and a new ACTAS Ambulance and Fire Station on the 2.4-hectare site.

“Gungahlin is a growing region with a thriving sports community,” Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry said. “A new indoor sports facility will provide local residents, sporting groups and organisations with access to better amenities and state-of-the-art facilities.

“The Gungahlin Community has been calling for more sports facilities, and I am committed to working with the local community sports groups and others in the design of a facility that will meet the needs of our sports into the future.”

Mick Gentleman, ACT Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, said: “The government is committed to having well prepared emergency services for the Gunghalin region, to service this growing community.  Planning and design works are already underway for a new Emergency Services station (in West Gunghalin) for ACT Fire & Rescue and ACT Ambulance services, which will enhance response times to emergency incidents as the community grows. This modern facility will also support our highly valued first responders in their service to the ACT community.”

The Estate Development Plan and the Subdivision Design Application will be completed in 2024-25.

The ACT Government’s study on traffic and transport improvements surrounding the Casey Group Centre will also be considered as the government designs a precinct that meets local needs.
