Vinnies’ new Mitchell op shop seeks volunteers

Officially opening next Wednesday 1 December, a new Vinnies op shop in Mitchell is getting its final touches just in time for Christmas and is looking for volunteers to help share some holiday cheer.

Area Manager for Vinnies North ACT, Gary Crowder, has been with the organisation for 12 years in the ACT and is excited to be opening a new store from the beginning, saying he couldn’t have done it without his “fantastic team”.

He said the new shop, located at 32 Hoskins Street, is an expansion of the Vinnies Warehouse in Mitchell and was needed after an increase in Canberrans requiring their services during the pandemic.

“If we can get everything right, we might do a soft opening hopefully as soon as this Friday [26 November]. I’m excited about the vibe and feel of the new shop and I think it’s quite interesting to see a Vinnies in an industrial area,” Mr Crowder said.

“We’re always looking for new volunteers! If you have any free time whatsoever, we’re happy to take on everyone. We’ll be looking to open Monday through to Saturday, so we’re looking for volunteers for any of those days.”

Acting CEO of Vinnies, Michelle Colefax, said volunteers will find the work both rewarding and meaningful, and there’s a role for everyone.

“We’re inviting people wanting to help us make a difference to contact us to find out how they can be part of our mission, especially in the lead up to the busy festive season.

“For those who haven’t visited our stores of late, they’ll now find a modern retail experience with the added bonus of knowing their purchase will make a real difference to our community, throughout the year,” Ms Colefax said.

“We know these past two years have been especially tough for many of our fellow Canberrans and those around our region and this a perfect time to lend a hand. By volunteering, you get to meet some wonderful people and gain new skills, too.”
