Nichole Overall is member for Monaro

Nationals candidate Nichole Overall has succeeded former NSW deputy premier John Barilaro as member for Monaro in this weekendโ€™s Super Saturday by-election.

Ms Overall led Labor candidate Bryce Wilson 55.3 per cent to 44.7 per cent, according to the NSW Electoral Commissionโ€™s two candidate preferred report.

Ms Overall is the wife of former Queanbeyan-Palerang mayor Tim Overall. Mr Wilson is a QPRC councillor, and contested the Monaro seat in 2019.

Ms Overall said that Mr Wilson texted her this morning to concede the result of the Monaro by-election.

โ€œThis has been a hard-fought election campaign, and I thank the other candidates for putting themselves forward to run,โ€ Ms Overall said.

โ€œWhile there are still a number of ballot papers to be counted, I believe we are in a position that will see us win the by-election.

โ€œMonaro is always a tough seat to win, and by-elections are always a challenge. However, if the trend continues, the result in Monaro will be a very positive outcome in light of traditional average swings in similar circumstances.

โ€œAmong other things, the result is a reflection on the NSW Nationalsโ€™ outstanding record of delivery in Monaro, and I look forward to carrying on that legacy for the benefit of all who call the Monaro electorate home.โ€

The Nationals, however, suffered a more than six per cent swing against them.

โ€œIn three weeks, we have achieved what many said we never could,โ€ Mr Wilson wrote to his supporters on Facebook. โ€œThanks to you, we have sent [NSW Premier] Dominic Perrottet a strong message. Together, we have ensured the Nationals can no longer take our region for granted.โ€

Ms Overall noted that in the last 15 by-elections contested by a government candidate, the average two party preferred swing against the government was -14.2%.
