Nick Blakey ruled out for the season with cracked fibula

The Sydney Swans have suffered a blow ahead of the AFL finals with young gun Nick Blakey ruled out for the rest of the season.

Blakey has impressed since coming back into the side in his new defensive role over the last two months.

He was one of the Swans best in Saturday night’s win over North Melbourne before an awkward landing from a marking contest led to him being substituted out of the match.

Scans on Monday confirmed the 21-year-old suffered a crack to the fibula in his right leg.

The Swans are now seeking specialist advice on the best course of treatment for the injury, with surgery a possibility.

“Nick had played his way into some really strong form over the last two months, providing exciting run and carry for us out of defence,” Sydney football boss Charlie Gardiner said.

“It is extremely disappointing to see him struck down with this injury at this point in the season.

“While there is no firm timeline on his return from injury at this stage, we are confident he will be ready well in time for the start of pre-season.”

The Swans are also sweating on co-captain Josh Kennedy’s hamstring injury ahead of their final-round meeting with Gold Coast.

Jake Lloyd (knee) is expected to play and Callum Mills (Achilles) is a chance, while Lance Franklin could return after being rested against the Kangaroos.
