A prisoner who escaped from a NSW jail in 1992 has turned himself in after almost 30 years on the run.

The man was 35 when he escaped from a jail at Grafton on the state’s north coast sometime between 7pm on July 31 and 7am on August 1, 1992.

The next time police heard from him was on Sunday, when the now 64-year-old surrendered himself at Dee Why Police Station on Sydney’s northern beaches.

Detectives from the Robbery and Serious Crime Squad’s Corrective Services Investigation Unit charged him with escaping from lawful custody.

Police say the man used tools including a hacksaw blade and bolt cutters to free himself from jail.

He was refused bail and appeared at Central Local Court on Tuesday, where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court on September 28.
