ACT Policing stopped two high-range drink drivers overnight – one for the eleventh time, and the other at more than 5 times the legal alcohol limit.

About 10.10pm, Monday 5 June, police attended a residence in Lyneham, after receiving a report of a collision. 

When police arrived they found a white Kia Rio stationary with its bonnet touching another vehicle in the driveway.  

After receiving a roadside positive result, the driver of the Kia, a 24-year-old man, was taken to City Police Station to undergo a Breath Analysis Test where he recorded a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) reading of 0.280, which is nearly 6 times the legal limit of 0.05.  

The man was issued an immediate suspension notice, suspending his licence for 90 days in the ACT. 

About 3.50am, Tuesday 6 June, a 44-year-old McGregor man was observed driving in Nicholls with a deflated rear tyre.  

When the driver stopped, police approached the vehicle and observed two passengers sitting on the passenger seat, one on the other’s lap, and neither wearing a seatbelt.  

The driver was then subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a positive result for alcohol. Later breath analysis at Gungahlin station returned a BAC reading of 0.141.  

Further police checks revealed the man was driving despite his licence having been disqualified four times previously, and this was the eleventh time he had been detected drink driving. The man was also on bail.  

Both men will face the ACT Magistrates Court today. The 24-year-old charged with high-range drink-driving and the 44-year-old charged with drink-driving, disqualified driving, and two counts of having a passenger over 16 not wearing a seatbelt.
