A new online resource, Canberra Community Projects, will showcase local climate action initiatives and support greater community collaboration on climate projects, Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Water, Energy and Emissions Reduction, announced.
“We are in the middle of a climate crisis, and the ACT Government wants to empower our community to be part of the solution,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“This new online tool allows Canberrans to discover a range of climate action projects around the ACT by using an interactive map. If you have a community driven project that focuses on energy, recycling and waste, water and plants, transport and travel, resilience, or adapting to extreme events, you can now submit your story to be added to the map.”
For instance, Mr Rattenbury said, the community-led, volunteer-run tool and equipment library, Community Toolbox Canberra. (Read more.) Members can borrow tools and equipment for activities such as DIY, craft, cooking, or home projects.
“The sharing model creates a way for people to share equipment and reduces the need for individuals to purchase tools, helping to reduce resource use and avoid waste to landfill,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“Supporting Canberrans to make everyday climate choices is crucial to achieving our target of net zero emissions by 2045. We know Canberrans care about the environment, and the ACT is full of passionate people working to make a difference and take action on climate change.
“Every person can be part of the ACT’s climate action journey. The new online resource will help people to have an opportunity to engage, connect, learn, and be inspired by the efforts taking place around Canberra.”
Mr Rattenbury said the web tool addresses key actions from the government’s ACT Climate Change Strategy 2019-25 to encourage community-driven solutions to climate change and to collaborate for increased ambitions.
