Two men have been charged with the shooting murder of a golf club caretaker at Hervey Bay, but police believe others are involved.
Detectives have revealed what killed 64-year-old Gregory Harding a week after his body was found.
He was shot at close range at his home at the Craignish Country Club. Police say he may have been the victim of a botched robbery.
It’s believed Mr Harding died on Sunday, August 15, the day before his body was discovered.
The homicide investigation is focused on an Isuzu four-wheel drive stolen from Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast on August 13.
Detective Inspector Gary Pettiford says it was driven to Hervey Bay and used in crimes there, including a ram raid at the Stockland Shopping Centre at 10pm on August 15.
Police have footage of three people involved in that incident, including one who appears to be a woman.
The 4WD was driven to the country club about 10.30pm.
“Following that, Mr Harding was murdered,” Det Insp Pettiford told reporters. “I can’t reveal the location of the gunshot wound.”
The vehicle was abandoned in Maryborough and set alight 30 minutes later, potentially destroying evidence.
“There is more than two persons involved in this offence,” Det Insp Pettiford said.
“We still have several more persons of interests … we will continue to investigate until all persons responsible for this horrendous crime are arrested and placed before the courts.”
The two men charged with Mr Harding’s murder are both from Loganlea at Logan, south of Brisbane. They were arrested on Saturday at Coomera, on the Gold Coast.
Police want to hear from anyone in the Hervey Bay, Maryborough or Logan areas who might have any information about what happened.
They particularly want to hear again from callers to CrimeStoppers who can help them build up a full picture of what happened.
“We are still investigating the motive for the murder,” Det Inps Pettiford said. “We haven’t ruled out that it was a robbery gone wrong.”
Earlier police said Mr Harding was found dead with a stack of documents near him, after someone went to the club on business but could not find him.
Joshua Marcus Pope, 30, and Gregory Tremayne Pryor, 25, did not appear when their charges were mentioned in a Brisbane court on Monday.
The pair could not apply for bail. They were remanded in custody for mention on September 20.
