Pedestrian struck by Melbourne tram dies

A pedestrian has died after being struck by a tram in Melbourne’s south.

Police believe the person was struck by the tram on Kings Way near York Street in South Melbourne just after 1.30pm on Saturday.

Fire Rescue Victoria crews arrived at the scene in three minutes to help get the person out from under the tram and into the care of Ambulance Victoria, a Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said.

The pedestrian died at the scene and is yet to be formally identified.

Victoria Police and Fire Rescue Victoria worked alongside Ambulance Victoria and Yarra Trams staff to help get people off the tram.

Police have urged anyone with information, dashcam footage or CCTV to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria.

Route 58 trams were diverted from the scene on Saturday afternoon.

Motorists were also advised to expect delays, with three inbound lanes closed on Kings Way at Sturt Street.

Yarra Trams chief executive Julien Dehornoy says it is assisting police with their investigation as well as conducting its own.

“We are heartbroken at today’s tragic accident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the pedestrian involved,” he said.
