A generation ago, the then-ACT Government developed a plan to conserve the Murrumbidgee River Corridor’s natural and cultural heritage. But much has changed since the 1990s, and today’s ACT Government believes it is time for a new, contemporary plan.
The 1998 Management Plan set out a policy to manage the Corridor to enhance its conservation, educational, and recreational values.
The Murrumbidgee River Corridor stretches the entire length of the Murrumbidgee River through the ACT, covering approximately 9,800 hectares. It includes five nature reserves, eight recreation reserves, and a European heritage zone at Lanyon, and is also rich in Aboriginal heritage. It is a popular spot for bushwalking, camping, picnicking, horse riding, wildlife and bird watching, swimming, fishing, and canoeing, and home to threatened species.
According to a recent Review, the 1998 Plan focused on maintaining water quality and integrity of aquatic and riparian ecosystems; protecting discrete nature conservation areas; managing the Lanyon and Lambrigg historic precincts; investigating and conserving cultural resources; and maintaining and enhancing recreational opportunities.
However, the Review also found that the Plan provided only limited information on biodiversity and other natural values, Aboriginal and historic cultural heritage, Aboriginal engagement and caring for Country, and did not consider climate change.
“Canberra’s growth over the past 23 years and into the future has placed, and will continue to place, increased pressure on the Corridor and its environmental and social values,” the Review states.
Mick Gentleman, ACT Minister for Planning and Land Management, believes the Territory needs “a new reserve management plan that will guide the conservation and protection of the natural and cultural values of the Corridor, while continuing to provide opportunities for nature-based recreational activities”.
He has asked for community input on the Review. “This consultation is the first stage the ACT Government is taking to develop a new and contemporary management plan for the area.”
That new plan would begin in 2022.
“We are seeking the community’s views on the past and future management of the Murrumbidgee River Corridor and suggestions in the development of a new reserve management plan,” Mr Gentleman said.
“We know how much Canberrans value our natural environment, and we want to make sure the river corridor continues to provide great experiences for future generations.”
