Plans for European bar win West Kiosk Lake Burley Griffin

Bubbling developments for the southern side of Lake Burley Griffin as two new visitor experiences are set to open this spring.

From November, Canberrans and visitors alike will be able to enjoy a new European style dining experience at West Kiosk, right by the edge of Lake Burley Griffin at West Jetty.

The new bar named ‘Margot Espresso Vin and Fromage’ (Margot) will specialise in local wines, curated cheeses, and morning espresso.

Chosen from several proposals submitted to operate the coveted spot, Margot is the brainchild of Nick Tyrrell of GoBoat and James Souter of The Boat House Restaurant, and is inspired by the relaxed outdoor dining experiences of European capitals.

Sustainable Valuables Pty Ltd, whose plan was voted on unanimously by the National Capital Authority (NCA), will shape the new lakeside attraction.

Margot’s name is a nod to one of the more famous cafes in Paris, Les Deux Margots, a favourite of famous novelist, Ernest Hemingway.

There will be the usual coffee and grab-and-go food from early morning, but afternoons and evenings will focus on local wines and cheeses.

Mr Tyrrell and Mr Souter envisage regular wine tastings with local vintners and a rotating menu to complement the four seasons of Canberra.

“From the moment we launched GoBoat here five years ago, it has been apparent how much people love Lake Burley Griffin,” said Mr Tyrrell.

“I am delighted to be able to launch another relaxed social and outdoor adventure for Canberrans and visitors to enjoy.”

The springtime makeover for Lake Burley Griffin continues with ‘The Little Burley Market’ which will open in the “cup area” of Commonwealth Place every Saturday 9am-1.30pm from 17 September to the end of May 2023.

It will bring together a range of Canberra vendors, where people can wander through the stalls of local products against the backdrop of the lake.

Local Village Markets, which revitalised Haig Park with the Haig Park Markets, will also be behind The Little Burley Market.

Creative Manager, Alexa Ashton, said their team is excited to be launching in “the mecca of ACT tourist attraction,” drawing in visitors for multiple visits.

Contributing to the festive atmosphere will be brand-new, colourful pedal boats for hire from the West Jetty, annually from October until March.

These developments follow the ‘Jetty’ food and music venue that opened last spring.

NCA Chief Executive, Sally Barnes, said Canberrans, visitors and tourists would have an experience akin to rivieras found in Italy, France, and other parts of Europe.

“We congratulate Nick Tyrell and his team from Sustainable Valuables on their new venture and look forward to enjoying their brand of hospitality at Margot later this year.”
