Pocock calls time on Super Rugby

David Pocock has confirmed his Super Rugby career is over with a ‘rare’ calf strain keeping the Brumbies flanker off the park.

The decision was made after extensive consultation between the Brumbies and Wallabies medical staff with no exact timeframe provided as to when Pocock will return to playing.

In making the announcement on Tuesday 28 May, Pocock said he will not be seeking a further contract with the Brumbies. After his commitments with Australian Rugby conclude this year, Pocock will reunite with the Panasonic Wild Knights in Japan.

While Pocock will not seek a new contract in Australian Rugby at the end of 2019, he will remain eligible for Wallabies selection via the 60-cap rule.

Pocock has made 112 Super Rugby appearances and scored 19 tries. He made his debut for the Western Force in 2006 and spent seven seasons in Perth before joining the Brumbies at the end of 2012. Unfortunately, Pocock’s time at the Brumbies has been hampered by injury.

“The Brumbies have given me a home for the last seven years. They’ve supported me through injury and given me the opportunity to work on my game and my leadership as part of an incredible group of men,” Pocock said.

In other player news, Wallabies international prop Scott Sio has signed a new deal to extend his career with the Brumbies for a further three-year commitment; hooker Maile Ngauamo and prop Angus Wagner have joined the Brumbies squad as injury replacements for the rest of the Super Rugby season.

Brumbies claim crucial win

The Brumbies have maintained their position atop the Australian Conference with a bonus-point win against the Bulls at GIO Stadium on Friday 24 May.

The Bulls were well in the contest at half-time, trailing 10-12, however were shut out in the second half as the Brumbies went on to win 22-10. Tevita Kuridrani starred for the home side with a hat-trick of tries.

The result sees the Brumbies sit one point clear of the Melbourne Rebels on the Super Rugby ladder with three rounds remaining. The Brumbies play the Sunwolves in Tokyo on Saturday 1 June 3.15pm.
