Two drug drivers in stolen cars with Tasers arrested in City, Ainslie

Two drug drivers in stolen vehicles and in possession of prohibited weapons were arrested in separate incidents yesterday by ACT Policing. The men will face a combined total of 13 charges in the ACT Magistrates Court today.

The first arrest was made after Road Policing officers stopped a Toyota Camry on London Circuit about 4.20pm Tuesday 22 March. The Camry had been reported stolen, and the driver was arrested a short time later.

Police observed a Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW) inside the vehicle, and conveyed the man to the ACT Watch House, where a drug screening resulted in a positive indication to a prescribed drug.

Further investigations revealed the man had supplied police with a false name and address and was driving despite his licence having been disqualified since October 2021.

The 31-year-old Lyneham man will face the ACT Magistrates Court today, Wednesday 23 March, charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, possession of a prohibited weapon, driving while disqualified, drug driving and providing a false name and address.

The second arrest was made by Road Policing officers after they observed a Kawasaki ZX6R motorcycle pull into a driveway on Ebden Street, Ainslie about 10.27pm Tuesday.

After conducting a traffic stop on the motorcycle, police saw the number plates attached to it had been altered. Further checks revealed the motorcycle had been reported as stolen.

Investigations revealed the motorcycle rider did not hold a current licence, and failed a roadside drug test. During the process of taking the man into custody after the roadside drug test, police discovered he was in possession of a home‑made CEW and other property suspected of being stolen.

The 50-year-old Torrens man was taken to the ACT Watch House, and will face the ACT Magistrates Court today charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent, drug driving, possession of a prohibited weapon, using an unregistered vehicle, using an uninsured vehicle, using a deceptively-changed number plate,  unlawful possession of stolen property and unlicensed driving.
