Police believe human remains found near the Point Hut Crossing of the Murrumbidgee River yesterday afternoon may belong to missing man Tim Lyons.
Tim, 38, went missing on 19 December 2023 and was last seen in Gordon. In February of this year, the police issued another plea for assistance in their investigation into his disappearance.
“It’s a distinct possibility that this deceased person is, in fact, Tim Lyons, the person who went missing in that area in December 2023,” Detective Superintendent Hall O’Meagher said. “We have been in contact with Mr Lyons’ family, and we’re working closely with them in this difficult time for them.”
Two members of the public discovered the remains while walking in the area on Sunday afternoon, 5 May. About 3.45pm, police attended the area near the northern end of Point Hut Crossing, finding the deceased male in long, overgrown grass.
“Well, those two people [who found the remains] were in there at the time, doing recreational activity. We’re providing them with all the support that they need to get through this difficult time. Obviously, it’s a shock and a surprise for them,” Detective Superintendent O’Meagher said.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, and a post mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death and formally identity the body.
“It’s evident from the early investigations that the human remains has been in situ for some time, at least a number of months. The cause of death is unknown at this point in time. Post mortem examination will be conducted during the week and we’re hoping to be able to discover the cause of death,” Detective Superintendent O’Meagher said.
The area around where the body was found is currently closed and will be opened in a few days.
