ACT police are investigating the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a 48-year-old man shot in Phillip overnight.
At 11.45pm last night, ACT Policing received a number of calls in relation to shots being fired at the Connorville Gardens unit complex along Mansfield Place, Phillip.
Police attended along with ambulance, where on arrival they found a 48-year-old man who had sustained a single gunshot wound that proved to be fatal.
The man was treated at the scene and transported to hospital, where he died a short time later.
There was another female occupant of the home at the residence at the time of the shooting who was uninjured.
It is yet to be established if the alleged shooter is known to the victim.
“We’re obviously looking at identifying who is responsible,” ACT Policing Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman said. “Police believe there is more than one offender involved.
“They’ve attended at the front of the residence and a single shot has been fired.”
A crime scene has been established where a number of items of evidence have been collected for forensic inspection with police “currently following a number of avenues of enquiry”.
Detective Inspector Boorman said there’s nothing to suggest at this time that the shooting has any links to outlaw motorcycle gangs but refused to rule it out given the investigation is still in its infancy.
“We’re yet to establish a reason for the attack at this stage,” he said, “so I’m not going to speculate at this point.”
Detective Inspector Boorman called on anyone with information relating to the Phillip death to contact police.
“I would like to call on anyone who would have any CCTV footage, dashcam footage of Mansfield Place at the time to contact police.”
Anyone with information or dash-cam footage of the area from around the time of the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.
