If you’re planning to drive the Hume Highway next week, be aware that NSW and Victoria police will be patrolling the 840km route between Sydney and Melbourne in a high visibility road safety blitz over four days, 5-8 March.
NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol officers will saturate the stretch from Sydney to the Victorian border as part of Operation Furious, while Victoria Police will continue the operation across the border, as part of Operation Hamilton.
The four-day joint operation will be conducted between Tuesday 5 March from 12.01am and Friday 8 March 11.59pm. It will see NSW Police Traffic & Highway Patrol officers deployed to the stretch of the Hume Highway from Summer Hill in Sydney to Albury on the Victorian border.
Operation Furious is targeting speeding and dangerous driving offences, with mobile and stationary speed enforcement to reduce serious injury and fatal crashes on the Hume Highway.
The first deployment will see more than 140 NSW and Victoria Traffic and Highway patrol operatives deployed over the four days, with more deployments planned throughout the year.
THWP South-West Acting Superintendent Greg Donaldson says its everyone’s responsibility to keep our roads safe.
“Over the last 10 years, 81 lives have been lost from 76 crashes along the Hume Highway between Sydney and Albury. Overwhelmingly, these crashes have been a result of driver behaviour, in the form of speeding, alcohol or drugs, fatigue or other poor driving choice. These lives could have been saved if drivers took greater responsibility when getting behind the wheel,” Acting Superintendent Donaldson said.
“These types of cross-border operations are important to show NSW Police and Victoria Police are working together to clamp down on dangerous driving. This sort of behaviour won’t be tolerated and we have drivers doing the wrong thing in our sights.”
