Police seek information after Gungahlin Cemetery thefts

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses and information to multiple incidents at the Gungahlin Cemetery this week.

About 4.30pm on Monday 29 July, a family attended a grave site and observed that a large pink quartz stone was removed. The stone was around 30-35cm tall with a circumference around 40cm. A granite plaque was also pulled off the concrete base. The site had been visited the day before and was not damaged at the time, so the incident occurred between Sunday and Monday afternoon.

Police attended the Cemetery and were advised of other recent incidents including:

  • A woman reported her phone stolen from her belongings while she was visiting a family members grave.
  • A man returned to his car on Monday afternoon to find a man allegedly attempting to break into his car.
  • A grave marker with two gold plated hands was stolen from a grave site.

The man attempting to break into the car allegedly left the scene with two other men in a white 4WD style vehicle with ACT registration.

Police are seeking to identify the three men who were at the Gungahlin Cemetary on Monday and are also seeking to confirm any other incidents that have occurred at the Cemetery recently.

Anyone who can assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website.  Please quote 7812019. Information can be provided anonymously.
