Police urge Canberrans to keep masking up and checking in

COVID-19 restrictions will relax in the ACT later this week – but police still urge Canberrans to mask-up and check-in. And ACT Policing will make sure people abide by the current restrictions.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr yesterday announced the pathway forward. Come this Friday, 1 October, two people will be able to visit another household; Canberrans can spend four hours outside in a gathering of five; all non-essential retail can offer click-and-collect and click-and-deliver services, with up to five people on the premises; outdoor boot camps, personal training, and coaching will start again for two people excluding staff; and ACT nature parks will reopen.

Detective Superintendent Naomi Binstead, from ACT Policing’s COVID-19 Taskforce, asked everyone to keep up to date on the changing restrictions.

“As the restrictions change from this Friday, ACT Policing asks people to remember to mask-up every time you leave home and to check-in where required,” said Detective Superintendent Binstead.

“There are very clear instructions on the ACT Government COVID-19 website about what can be done from Friday. Please ensure you adhere to these new arrangements.”

Last week, the Australian Defence Force began helping police on border patrols, ensuring drivers trying to enter the ACT had a valid permit. They checked more than 5,800 vehicles and turned around more than 40 drivers.

ACT Policing COVID-19 Taskforce members maintained their patrols during the week: they moved people on from Green Square in Kingston; checked the size of gatherings at Canberra’s lakes and in parks; and conducted more than 430 home and business checks.
