Queanbeyan micro-forest campaign launches

Put on your gloves, grab your shovel, and get ready to plant. The Queanbeyan Micro-Forest crowdfunding campaign will launch online today, Tuesday 21 March, and ends on Sunday 16 April. Every donation counts, and will help make the Micro-Forest a reality.

The micro-forest of 1,500 climate-resilient native plants will be in Blackall Park.

Organisers say the site is perfect for transforming an underused space into a mini-ecosystem of trees, shrubs, climbers, and ground-covers. The micro-forest will reduce urban heat, provide habitat for native wildlife, and create a shady, inviting space for locals to meet, play, and relax.

Project co-lead Mitch Porteous said the project is crowdfunded, people-powered, and locally led.

“After seeing the successful micro-forests in the ACT, we thought Queanbeyan would be absolutely perfect for our own. We want everyone to be part of it and feel connected to the micro-forest.

“The micro-forest will be a green space that’s not only beautiful, but also useful.”

The crowdfunding campaign hopes to raise $20,000. This will fund the essentials, including the master plan, earthworks, irrigation, and plants. The community is invited to participate at every stage, from design to planting and maintenance.

If the $20,000 target is met, organisers want to achieve even more. Further contributions could fund a playscape for children and a forest classroom for outdoor learning.

A community Easter egg hunt will be held on Saturday 8 April, and a fundraising bake sale and BBQ on Saturday 15 April. Both events will be held at Blackall Park so attendees can tour the site and see where the micro-forest will flourish.

Queanbeyan Micro-Forest is partnering with the Climate Factory, the Queanbeyan Hive, and Canberra Native Nursery.
