If you’re a young woman aged 18-25 years who would like to be a rural ambassador for the wider Capital Region, the Queanbeyan Show is looking for applicants for the 2018 Miss Showgirl competition.
Reigning Queanbeyan Showgirl Keeley Pasfield, 23, is an exercise physiologist who grew up on acreage at Carwoola, NSW where her family has horses. Keeley’s success at the 2017 Queanbeyan Show saw her progress through zone finals all the way to being one of 17 finalists at this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show, who were chosen from over 500 participants in shows across NSW.
According to Keeley, organisers are looking for personable young women who can relate to other people, have good knowledge of rural affairs and are involved in their community.
She says her Showgirl journey has provided wonderful opportunities for personal growth and development and to make lifelong friends, who continue to bounce ideas off one another.
“Although it’s a competition, it’s about women empowering each other,” she says.
Keeley believes one of the best aspects has been the ongoing mentoring she has received throughout her journey, including having been paired with an Invictus Games representative. She says the mentorship and training provided has given her the skills and confidence to contribute more to the local community, from running a community exercise class to increasing her involvement with the local soccer club.
Keeley is also keen to help organise sponsorships and recruit applicants for this year’s Queanbeyan Showgirl competition, as well as providing guidance for the young women who apply.
Entries for the senior showgirl close on 8 November 5pm, with judging from 7.30pm; venue to be advised. Entries for the junior competition close on 9 November 3pm and judging will start from 4.30pm at the Queanbeyan Showground.
