Jamal Fogarty has been linked with a move to the Canberra Raiders just one month after Gold Coast announced their co-captain would remain at the NRL club until 2023.
The Raiders’ search for a No.7 to replace departed Englishman George Williams has centred on Fogarty, who has risen to a leadership position at the Titans after earning a second NRL chance last year.
The 27-year-old Fogarty trumpeted a contract extension in August, but on Wednesday multiple reports suggested the player and club would now entertain an immediate release.
Ashley Taylor, who wasn’t offered a new contract by Gold Coast, was initially floated to replace Williams while Warriors talent Chanel Harris-Tavita has also been linked to the Raiders.
Fogarty’s departure would open the door for 20-year-old playmaker Toby Sexton to own the No.7 on the Gold Coast in what could be an exciting but raw spine in 2022.
Queensland State of Origin representative AJ Brimson’s move from fullback to the No.6 has already been floated, a shift that would allow Jayden Campbell to remain at fullback after his bright finish to 2021.
Warriors recruit Paul Turner and versatile Tanah Boyd are other young backline and spine options for Titans coach Justin Holbrook next season.Â
Fogarty already has a fond place in most Canberra fans hearts after he was the man Raiders star Josh Papalii ankle tapped in one of the great chase down tackles last season.
