The Canberra Raiders look set to secure one of rugby league’s hottest prospects, with reports suggesting that former Knights prop Leo Thompson is on the verge of signing a long-term deal with the club.
Thompson, who announced his departure from the Newcastle Knights earlier this week, had been a target for a number NRL clubs, including the Bulldogs and Roosters. However, the Raiders appear to have clinched his signature, with Channel Nine reporting the 24-year-old has informed his Newcastle teammates of his decision.
A significant factor in the move is reportedly Thompson’s personal ties to Canberra, with his partner keen to return to her hometown. He was also a part of the Raiders Jersey Flegg squad in 2021 before signing with the Knights.
Thompson’s signing would be a major boost for the Raiders, given his form during the 2024 season. Starting in 23 games for Newcastle, Thompson established himself as a dynamic presence in the forward pack, helping the Knights make a late-season surge into the finals. He has also represented the New Zealand at the international level.
With Canberra veteran Josh Papali’i nearing the end of his career, Thompson could be the perfect replacement to partner fellow Kiwi Joe Tapine in the front row for years to come.
