There’s red carpet references, and then there’s Margot Robbie on the 2023 Barbie press tour. From rare collectables to toys many of us may remember (or still have), the Australian starlet has worn the human-sized versions of at least 10 Barbie doll outfits so far. Here are some of our top picks.

At a fan event at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney, Robbie wore archival Versace, which fans believe may be a reference to 2019’s ‘Happy Birthday Barbie’. The look is confirmed to an ode to another blonde bombshell often compared to the doll, supermodel Claudia Schiffer, who originally wore the metallic dress to dance the night away at Paris Fashion Week, 1994.

How perfect are the signature funky patterns of Italian designer Emilio Pucci for creating a modernised, early ‘90s look? The custom mini dress, worn by Robbie to a photocall in Mexico City, is the 2023 version of 1992’s ‘Totally Hair Barbie’, complete with waist-length, crimped extensions.

Naturally, she went all out for the Barbie world premiere in Los Angeles, wearing couture by Schiaparelli. Everything from the bejeweled evening gown, right down to her gauzy pink handkerchief, is a human-sized recreation of 1960’s ‘Solo in the Spotlight Barbie’.

Recently, at the European Premiere of Barbie at Leicester Square, London, the actress wore Vivienne Westwood’s custom recreation of 1960’s ‘Enchanted Evening Barbie’. Even the original doll’s sparkly clear slippers are refashioned to be worn by Robbie – a rare collectible if there ever was one.
