First ACT road death of 2023 on William Hovell Drive

The first death on the ACT’s roads in 2023 was recorded this morning after a two-vehicle collision on William Hovell Drive.

About 7am, police and other emergency services responded to reports of a head-on collision between a concrete pumping truck and a blue Hyundai hatchback.

The driver of the Hyundai, a man in his early 20s, was unable to be revived by ACT Ambulance Service paramedics, and was declared deceased at the scene.

There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Preliminary investigations indicate the westbound Hyundai crossed to the wrong side of the road into the path of the city-bound truck. ACT Road Policing’s Major Collision Team is conducting an investigation, and will prepare a report for the Coroner.

William Hovell Drive was closed for several hours.

Any witnesses to the crash who have not yet spoken with police, or anyone with dashcam footage that captured either vehicle before the collision should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the website.
