Sams to miss remainder of regular season for Thunder

Sydney Thunder all-rounder Daniel Sams will miss the final three matches of the BBL regular season after injuring his right hand at Manuka Oval on Monday night, 18 January.

Scans have confirmed Sams suffered a bone and ligament injury in his hand after he fell awkwardly while fielding a ball off his own bowling against the Hobart Hurricanes.

Thunder’s physiotherapist Murray Ryan confirmed today that Sams would be unavailable for their crucial derby against the Sydney Sixers at Adelaide Oval on Friday 22 January. He will also miss the back-to-back matches against Adelaide Strikers on 24-25 January.

Sams will travel to Adelaide with the squad this evening as there is a possibility he will be able to play in the finals.

“Daniel fell awkwardly onto his right hand and wrist while fielding off his own bowling,” said Ryan.

“Scans completed yesterday have indicated a bone and ligament injury that has been reviewed by a hand specialist.

“Dan has subsequently been ruled out of the final three Thunder round games. His timeline for a return to play will be determined by medical staff following these games.”

Sams, who made his T20 debut for Australia in December, has so far this season taken 10 wickets at 22.90, while he’s excelled with the bat by scoring 199 runs at 49.75 to boast an impressive strike-rate of 191.

The Thunder won six of their first eight matches this season but have since lost their past three. They currently sit in third place on the ladder, just two points clear of the sixth-placed Brisbane Heat as finals approach.
