Schiller, Woolford among four to re-sign with Raiders

The Canberra Raiders have announced the re-signings of four players to their NRL squad for the upcoming seasons.

Zac Woolford, James Schiller and Ata Mariota have all signed new two-year deals with the Raiders which will see them remain with the club until the end of the 2024 season.

Woolford has impressed since debuting for the club in round 10 against the Sharks, while Schiller is coming off a stunning match-winning try against Melbourne last weekend.

Schiller, a 21-year-old who only joined the Raiders ahead of this NRL season on a train-and-trial contract, says sticking around longer at his local club is a no-brainer.

“Canberra’s home for me, it was a pretty easy decision when they sent an offer through so I’m glad to be staying here,” he told reporters.

“You wouldn’t expect this coming into a team on a train-and-trial, I wasn’t thinking I’d be anywhere near where I am in November last year.

“I’m very grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and hopefully I can continue with my form throughout the rest of the year.”

Of his spectacular winning try against the Storm that saw him grubber to himself and regather the ball to score after skipping around the corner post, Schiller urged his mates to stop sending him video of the heroics.

“A lot of people have sent it to me as if I wasn’t there,” he said with a laugh.

“It’s something I can add to a highlight reel now and remember forever, but I want to also move on, there’s a lot more to produce.

“Not a lot was going through my head, I just had to wing it … I just acted off of instinct and thankfully it was the right act.”

The only thing tarnishing his dream week was an ankle injury suffered scoring the try that will rule him out of Saturday’s clash with the NZ Warriors.

Veteran half Matt Frawley has also agreed to a new one-year deal with the Raiders which will see him remain in the squad for the 2023 season. Frawley has started in the halves five times this season, with the Raiders winning four of those matches.

Raiders CEO Don Furner said the re-signing of all four players continued the clubs push to secure the bulk of the playing squad for 2023 and beyond.

“The club is very pleased to be able to re-sign a number of players, who will continue to develop and be part of our squad moving forward,” Furner said.

“Zac Woolford and James Schiller are two great examples of players coming here for an opportunity and being rewarded for their hard work and commitment.

“Ata Mariota is a young player who will continue his development with us and look to make his NRL debut for the club, while Matt Frawley is an experienced half who continues to be a valuable member of the playing squad.”
