A man was arrested this morning for riding a scooter at more than 100 km/h – 75 km over the speed limit. The man was on drugs, to boot.

About 8.40am today, ACT Road Policing officers observed the scooter on the Majura Parkway on-road bike lane, and a police laser confirmed its excessive speed.

When police motorcycle officers directed the scooter rider to stop, he left the roadway and proceeded onto an adjacent bike path.

Soon after, the rider lost control of the scooter and fell off, before attempting to flee the scene on foot. He was apprehended nearby a short time later, and a roadside test returned a positive result for methamphetamine.

The rider, a 38-year-old Phillip man, was conveyed to hospital by ambulance for treatment to minor injuries.

It is illegal to ride a Personal Mobility Device, including an e-scooter, at a speed in excess of 25km/h. The rider will be charged with vehicular offences including disqualified driving, using an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and failing to stop for police. Additional charges are likely.

Police seized the scooter, and the man will face court in January.

Police also stopped the first driver in the ACT who will lose their licence for speeding, due to double demerit points received this Christmas holiday period.

About 7.20am today, a red Mazda Utility was detected at 139km/h in a 90km/h zone on Caswell Drive, Aranda. A 22-year-old Belconnen woman was issued an infringement of $1,841 and 12 demerit points.

Road users are reminded double demerit points are in effect in the ACT until 11.59pm Monday, 2 January 2023.
