With temperatures expected to reach 39ยฐC, the Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe heatwave warning for the ACT, effective from Saturday 14 December to Tuesday 17 December. Residents are encouraged to prepare ahead and take precautions to stay safe during the extreme heat.
The ACT Ambulance Service recommends the following precautions:
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water and keeping a bottle with you at all times.
- Never leave children, adults, or pets in carsโhot cars can kill.
- Seek out cool environments like air-conditioned spaces, use fans, take cool showers, and wear light, loose-fitting clothing made from natural fabrics.
- Schedule activities for the coolest parts of the day and avoid strenuous exercise in the heat.
- Check on vulnerable individuals, including those over 65, young children, people with medical conditions, and outdoor workers.
Be alert for heat-related illnesses, which can range from mild conditions like heat rash to life-threatening heatstroke. Know the symptoms and seek medical attention if needed. Visit your GP or a Walk-In Centre if you or someone nearby becomes unwell.
