A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Canberra and Queanbeyan, with damaging winds and heavy rainfall expected around 5:05pm today.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued the alert at 4:07 pm on Wednesday, 15 January 2025, warning of a line of severe thunderstorms approaching the ACT. As of 4:05 pm, severe storms likely to produce damaging winds and heavy rainfall, with the potential for flash flooding, were detected near Brindabella and Mount Franklin in the Brindabellas. The storms are moving east to southeast and are expected to impact Belconnen, Canberra Civic, Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong, Hall, Gungahlin, Canberra Airport, South Canberra, Weston Creek, and Woden Valley by 5:05 pm.
Safety Advice from the State Emergency Service
The ACT State Emergency Service advises the following safety precautions:
- Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
- Secure loose items around your property.
- Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or potentially energised objects such as fences.
- Report fallen power lines to your energy provider (Ausgrid: 131 388, Endeavour Energy: 131 003, Essential Energy: 132 080, Evoenergy: 131 093).
- Stay clear of creeks and storm drains.
- Avoid walking, cycling, or driving through floodwaters.
- If trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge at the highest possible point and call 000 if rescue is needed.
- Unplug computers and appliances.
- Avoid using the phone during the storm.
- Stay indoors, away from windows, and ensure children and pets remain inside.
