Lightning starts fire in Gungahlin after thunderstorms lash Canberra

A lightning strike has reportedly started a small grass fire in Gungahlin during wild thunderstorms across Canberra this afternoon.

Footage posted to social media showed the grass ablaze near the Access Canberra building in Gungahlin.

The fire comes after Canberra was smashed with heavy rain and lightning throughout the afternoon, with severe thunderstorms first detected near Tuggeranong, Weston Creek and Woden Valley at about 2.45pm. The storms then moved northeast, hitting South Canberra, Civic, Belconnen and Gungahlin.

It’s important to never drive, ride or walk through floodwater. If you need support during storms and floods call the ACTSES on 132 500. In a life-threatening emergency call Triple Zero (000).
