With overnight lows back in the minuses, cold blustery winds, some snow, and a chance of light hail in the next 48 hours, wintry weather is making a brief return to Canberra this week.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Jackson Browne said over the weekend, a strong cold front has swept through parts of southern eastern Australia, bringing windy conditions to the Canberra region.
He said the hills of Canberra may receive a possible dusting of snow on Tuesday night, same for Goulburn, parts of the NSW Central Tablelands, and the Northern Tablelands townships of Armidale and Glen Innes.
It is predicted to reach -1oC in Canberra tonight and -2oC tomorrow night.
According to BOM, the monthly mean minimum temperature for Canberra in September is 3.1oC, with the lowest September minimum recorded -6.8oC in 2012.
The cool change is expected to see temperatures drop by up to 10oC in some places.
This forecast comes as snow levels drop from 1000m above sea level to around 600m across the ACT and NSW due to the cold front.
“Whilst it will be cold across most of the state, the showers that will be providing that snow are small in nature, and not all locations will see snow,” Mr Browne said.
Accompanying the snow, potentially damaging winds will hamper the ACT and much of NSW until Tuesday night, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning the system has the potential to bring down trees and powerlines.
ACT ESA distributed a message on Twitter today warning Canberrans that thunderstorms and a chance of small hail is predicted for this afternoon.
“The cold front is fast-moving and expected to impact the ACT imminently, until approximately 9pm tonight,” they wrote.
With most of the wild winds and snowfall due to wrap up by Wednesday morning, Mr Browne described the weather event as a “fairly rapid affair”.
“The front is pretty mobile so it blows off the far north-eastern parts of NSW during the course of Wednesday,” he said.
A severe weather warning for damaging winds issued earlier today for the ACT and the NSW Snowy Mountains was cancelled with the winds easing in wake of the cold front moving through.
