With the NSW ski season well underway, ACT Policing has today issued a blunt reminder to drivers about the dangers of speeding as police book two more high range offenders, one of whom was hurrying to get to the snow.
Both drivers were stopped on Majura Parkway in a section with a 100kmh speed limit.
The first driver was clocked at 142kmh and received a $700 fine and four demerit points.
A second driver was recorded driving at 123kmh and received a $489 fine and 3 demerit points.
Officer in Charge of Traffic Operations, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman said he had heard every excuse in the book from drivers trying to justify their reckless behaviour on the road.
“One of these drivers claimed they hadn’t been paying attention as they were feeling tired on a long trip from Sydney to the snow,” Detective Inspector Boorman said.
“This is simply ridiculous. Every winter we work with our colleagues from the NSW Police to remind motorists to take regular breaks and drive safely when going to the snow.
“If you’re tired, speeding is even more dangerous, and you may not even get to the snow. The choice is yours – pull over and take a break, or face the consequences.”
Speeding drivers involved in a collision can face serious charges, including negligent or culpable driving resulting in injury or death, and penalties of up to 14 years imprisonment.
Last month, ACT Policing reported that instances of speeding on Canberra roads have only increased during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Earlier in June, two men were stopped by police on Majura Parkway for driving at dangerous speeds well higher than 45km/h above the limit within two hours of one another.
Since the Majura Park opened in April 2016, ACT Policing have issued over 830 speeding infringement notices along the arterial road; ranking it the fourth highest in that time behind Gungahlin Drive, William Hovell Drive, and Belconnen Way.
ACT Policing has attended 43 collisions on the Majura Parkway between 2016 and 31 May 2020.
