What’s trending in the kitchen for the year ahead?
After a year that saw many of us confined to our houses (and kitchens) for a lot of the time, the way we think about eating and preparing food has changed. The Pinterest Predicts report shows people globally are searching for new ideas to please their taste buds, like next-level charcuterie boards, chef-worthy dishes prepared at home and lots of spice.
Restaurant at home
If you can’t go out, stay in! Pinterest is predicting people will continue to prepare restaurant quality meals at home with the presentation to match – searches for ‘gourmet food plating’ are on the up, as are searches for garnishes and ‘bread art’.
Some like it hot
Mover over umami, spice is here to reign supreme this year with Pinterest predicting people will be reaching for the chilli more than ever in 2021. Popular recipe searches include tomatillo enchiladas, Cajun chicken pasta and Jalapeno pepper jam.
Fancy boards
Millennials and Gen Z will be looking to up their charcuterie board game, expanding beyond cheese and crackers to serve up everything from nibbles to breakfast. Pinterest says we will be seeing boards that present sweets, like lollies and chocolates, desserts, fruit and breakfasts, as visual works of art. Searches have been coming in thick and fast from people wanting to create taco boards, as well as for ‘breakfast charcuterie boards’.
But first, let me take a ‘shelfie’
Looking beyond the taste buds for just a minute, kitchen shelves are fast becoming the most popular corners of the home and are a great way to showcase your aesthetic. Searches are up for collectable and eye-catching serving ware, like copper cookware, coloured glassware and clay plates, as well as ways to showcase them, such as floating shelves and plate racks. Also coming in hot as a trend to watch out for is for modern, minimalist kitchens in the ‘Japandi’ aesthetic – where Japanese design meets Scandinavian minimalism.
Celebrate the small things
After a year that felt like the punches just kept coming, people are starting to take time out to celebrate the small things like month-iversarys and date nights, with at-home setups to make someone else smile. Searches for movie date night at home and ‘cheers and beers’ parties are both up.
