Caps players for Opals squad
Canberra Capitals guard Maddison Rocci (pictured) has been announced in the Australian Opals squad for the Tokyo Olympic Games. The back-to-back WNBL champion will join fellow caps players, Marianna Tolo and Kelsey Griffin, in the 23-player squad. The squad will begin preparation and training between 8 and 16 November, despite uncertainty around the FIBA Qualification window.
Orienteering ACT resumes
Orienteering has kicked off again in Canberra, under a COVID-19 safe arrangement. The sprint distance, mountain bike and mid-week series all started from the week beginning 5 July. The metro and classic series start this week beginning 12 July. As part of the organisation’s COVID-safe plan, most competitors must register for events beforehand, with limited enter-on-the-day options. For more information: act.orienteering.asn.au
Raiders fall short
The Canberra Raiders have fallen short of a fourth victory in a row over the Melbourne Storm, going down 14-20 at GIO Stadium Canberra. The teams were level at 6-6 with 12 minutes to go in the first half when winger Bailey Simonsson was sent off-field after a controversial call, with the Storm scoring soon after. The Green Machine were again riddled with injury during the game, with hooker Josh Hodgson rupturing his ACL in a season-ending injury, while Simonsson injured his shoulder late in the game and is meeting with a surgeon later in the week.
Belconnen basketball booms
The Belconnen basketball courts have received an upgrade after the ACT Government committed $36,400 to Basketball ACT through COVID sport sector funding. The works include resurfacing the floors, roof and grandstand repairs, and new paint for the venue. The work has been happening behind the scenes while community sport has been off the cards. The commencement of the 2020 Senior Social Winter Competition has been postponed until 27 July, with the newly upgraded courts ready to go.
CRRL draw released
Canberra Region Rugby League Cup draws have been announced, along with a name change for the 2020 season. The CRRL committee have decided to change the Blumers Canberra Raiders Cup to the Blumers CRRL Cup for this season only. This will cover the First Grade, Reserve Grade and Women’s League Tag competitions. Season will start on 25 July, with finals being played on the weekend of 26 and 27 September. Community netball continues
Netball ACT has announced the return of training and competitions will still go ahead, despite restriction announcements from ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr on 9 July. The non-contact sport is permitted to go ahead under Stage 2.2 of the ACT Government Recovery Plan, with most of its competitions due to start towards the end of July.
