New head coach at United
Canberra United has welcomed Vicki Linton as head coach for its Westfield W-League team. Linton has recently travelled back to Australia, after spending the past three years working with the US Soccer Federation’s Development Academy. She has also previously worked as head coach for the Junior Matildas and Melbourne Victory’s W-League team. Details are yet to be confirmed on the commencement of the 2020 W-League season, which usually begins in November.
Raiders defeat Cowboys
The Canberra Raiders have pulled off another close win, this time against the North Queensland Cowboys in Round 12 over the weekend. Curtis Scott made his mark after returning from an arm injury, scoring a try to even the scores 12-12 in the 57th minute. After a conversion from Jarrod Croker, the Canberra team held the two-point lead for the remainder of the game. The Raiders are currently sitting at fifth on the ladder and will need a convincing win against the Penrith Panthers this weekend to secure a top four spot. The Raiders face the Panthers this Saturday 8 August 7.35pm at Panthers Stadium, Penrith.
Brumbies down Reds
The Brumbies continued their winning streak against the Queensland Reds over the weekend, but only just. Taking out the game with a penalty goal 40 metres out after the siren put the Plus500 Brumbies up 22-20 at GIO Stadium Canberra. The side were previously trailing 20-14 with 10 minutes on the clock. The team is still undefeated since it kicked off its campaign in the Super Rugby AU competition on 3 July. The Plus500 Brumbies will face the Melbourne Rebels this Friday 7 August 7.05pm.
CBR Brave
CBR Brave were “heartbroken” after the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) announced the season cancellation late last week. The original season was supposed to kick off in April but was delayed due to COVID-19. A ‘Return to Play’ committee had been formed to discuss alternatives but decided to cancel any hopes for a season following ongoing border closures and the recent spike in coronavirus cases. The local team have hinted at a “special Brave hockey weekend” later in the year.
Capital Football partners with RefLIVE
Capital Football have announced a partnership with RefLIVE, a sporting technology for referee wellbeing. The app assists referees to track team behaviour and monitor performance and is used across a variety of sports. The technology was rolled out in Capital Football competitions from 18 July and hopes to improve the environment for referees and to boost ongoing participation in football.
