As sports across all levels and codes slowly return to activity, here are some of the latest developments in the Canberra region.
SUMMER OF CRICKET
Manuka Oval is scheduled to host international cricket action after Cricket Australia announced its 2020-21 men’s and women’s international schedule.
Currently, Manuka Oval is scheduled to host a men’s T20I series match between Australia and India on 14 October and an ODI against New Zealand on 29 January, as well as a women’s ODI series match between Australia and India on 22 January.
“We know that circumstances or events beyond our control could mean that the final schedule potentially may look different to the one released today, but we’ll be doing everything we can to get as much international cricket in as possible this summer,” Cricket Australia CEO Kevin Roberts said. “We will communicate any changes to the schedule if or when they are required.”
Final details of the Australia – Zimbabwe ODI series scheduled in August will be confirmed in the coming weeks after consultation with relevant stakeholders.
BATEMAN SIDELINED
The Canberra Raiders have confirmed England international John Bateman will require additional surgery on his shoulder, which will keep him sidelined indefinitely.
“I’m gutted to be having surgery again but it’s what’s best for me and the team and to help me get back on the field as soon as possible,” Bateman said. “I’ll be working harder than ever with my rehab to get myself back on the field with the lads. See you all soon.”
A timeframe on his recovery will be known post-surgery.
NO GO FOR SUNWOLVES
Rugby Australia and the Sunwolves have come to the conclusion that the Japan-based team will be unable to participate in the proposed Vodafone Super Rugby AU competition.
Despite the best efforts and intentions of both organisations, challenges created by COVID-19 will prevent the team from having time to adequately prepare and be ready to participate in the Australia-based competition which is planned for a 3 July kick-off.
As a result of the Japanese-based team being unable to compete in the new competition, the Brumbies have been able to secure versatile forward Ben Hyne for a second stint in Canberra.
Hyne made his Super Rugby debut for the Brumbies back in 2016, with serious injuries resulting in him playing five matches for the club before departing at the end of 2019. The 25-year-old joined the Sunwolves before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hyne’s return comes after lock Cadeyrn Neville had ankle surgery during the shutdown period, which will keep him sidelined for the start of the revamped competition. Hyne’s versatility as a loose forward or in the second row could prove a valuable asset to the team.
BASKETBALL ACT (BACT)
To provide support and assistance to Basketball ACT affiliated clubs, BACT will offer free court hire at Belconnen Stadium for the month of June. BACT is anticipating that any savings made by clubs will be re-directed into supporting their members, in particular those who may have suffered the most during this period.
Canberra Southern Cross Club has also partnered with the association to support BACT’s South Canberra clubs, by offering the same arrangement for their existing bookings at the Tuggeranong Southern Cross Club Stadium.
In preparation for a return to indoor training, and in accordance with Basketball Australia protocols and ACT Government advice, all training sessions (both indoor and outdoor) will be subject to strict protocols around allowable participant numbers, social distancing measures and hygiene practices. HOCKEY ACT
Craig Sloan has been appointed as the new President of Hockey ACT. Having been a Board Director since 2017, he brings a wealth of experience and understanding to the organisation and position, especially during these turbulent times caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hockey ACT thanked former President, Peter Martens, for his eight years of dedication and service to the association. Under his guidance, Hockey ACT saw the successful redevelopment of the National Hockey Centre in Lyneham and Tuggeranong Hockey Park into business hubs for the community.
Hockey ACT began a gradual return to training from Monday 25 May.
