Spotlight to open first ACT store

Those looking for their DIY and homewares fix from Spotlight will no longer have to head across the border, with the first store based in the ACT set to open its doors on Wednesday 1 July.

Located at 35 Crinigan Circle in Gungahlin, the new store will provide employment for 45 team members with the majority from Gungahlin and neighbouring suburbs.

Spotlight’s Regional Manager, Nenad Kalebic, said they have been hoping to open a Spotlight store in the Canberra region for some time, “as we know many Canberrans are travelling out to our Queanbeyan store”.

“We’re pleased to have found a location that will allow us to build the large format, full-service store that will benefit everyone in the region. This has been a long journey but we’re glad to finally bring Spotlight to the ACT.”

The new Spotlight store will cover an area of 2,587sqm, providing the Gungahlin and surrounding communities with Spotlight ranges spanning across party, kitchen and dining, lounge and bedroom, craft and sew, hobby and art, and bathroom and laundry.

The opening is timely for the business as more people have been sourcing craft and DIY materials during COVID-19, with popular items including painting and artistry supplies, fabric of all kinds and sewing machines.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic we have seen the demand for certain items change and, in some instances, grow,” Nenad said.

“Families with children have been seeking not only boredom-busting activities but also resources for learning at home, while many have also taken the opportunity to finally finish that decorating job they have been putting off, such has hanging new curtains or making over the spare bedroom.”

Spotlight will host the grand opening of its Gungahlin store on Wednesday 1 July at 8am. To celebrate, the local community is invited to attend and enjoy live entertainment, a guest appearance from Paw Patrol, balloon art and refreshments from a coffee cart and food truck.

To assist with social distancing, Spotlight will hold their opening sale until Sunday 5 July, and have increased store cleaning to safeguard the health and safety of customers and team members.
