State of Origin Three: Papalii in for Queensland, Wighton 18th man for NSW

Canberra Raiders front rower Josh Papalii has retained his spot in the Queensland side for the State of Origin decider on Wednesday 13 July, while teammate Jack Wighton has missed out on the 17 for NSW.

Papalii was under pressure to keep his place in the side after a quiet opening two games for the Maroons, but coach Billy Slater has decided to stick with the veteran prop.

With Felise Kaufusi ruled out, Slater has named North Queensland forward Tom Gilbert to debut off the bench with his club teammate Jeremiah Nanai to start in the second row.

Cameron Munster (shoulder) and Kalyn Ponga (concussion) have both been named after missing games for their clubs on the weekend.

The Maroons were dominated in a 44-12 loss in Perth last Sunday, where they had the chance to seal the series after an upset 16-10 victory in Sydney.

Meanwhile, Canberra five-eighth Wighton will have to make do with being the Blues’ 18th man after missing game two with COVID-19.

Wighton struggled in his only game back from COVID as the Raiders fell 12-10 to the Dragons in atrocious conditions yesterday.

Despite the withdrawal of Latrell Mitchell, Wighton has been unable to dislodge Matt Burton and Stephen Crichton in the centres or Siosifa Talakai on the bench.

Jordan McLean will debut for NSW in the place of Payne Haas after the Brisbane prop was ruled out with a shoulder injury.

Haas, who has been battling a recurring AC joint issue all season, played in the Broncos’ 40-26 defeat to the Cowboys on Saturday.

He has since reaggravated the injury and won’t feature in the decider at Suncorp Stadium on July 13.
